Learn to Crochet with me!

Learning to crochet with The Secret Crocheter

Yay – you’ve found me! I’m Nicola, The Secret Crocheter, and I bloody well LOVE everything crochet! (Pretty sure you’ve worked that out already.)

I reckon you’re here because you’d like to learn to crochet, and let me tell you, if I’m right, then I’m the woman for you! We’re about to embark on the most exciting journey together and I can’t wait to see you fall in love with crochet, just like I did (many years ago!).

I’ve been a teacher for the past twenty years and for the last sixish years, I’ve been teaching people to crochet; I think I’ve taught over 300 people to crochet to date! I hear a lot of the same phrases at the start of the session: ‘I’ve tried to teach myself loads of times before but I just can’t get it,’ or ‘I’m left handed so I can’t crochet,’ or ‘I’m really cack handed!’ Let me tell you now that EVERYONE can crochet; all you need is an awesome teacher (hello!) and plenty of time to practice.

I promise you – you’re only one step away from your first crocheted hat, scarf or blanket.

‘I had my “Learn to Crochet” lesson back in May 2019 and it’s safe to say I was hooked. I have totally enjoyed my crochet journey with The Secret Crocheter, making new things in all of the wonderful workshops…It’s safe to say crochet has changed my life for the better, with new friends I would never have met with The Secret Crocheter.’  Janet.

I live in a tucked away part of Melksham and this is where you’ll find my purpose-built crochet cabin (built by my very clever husband).  It’s filled with bright and colourful crochet makes, all designed and made by yours truly, which will show you just how cool it is to crochet!  You won’t find a matinee jacket nor a pair of baby booties in here, oh no! Instead, you’ll discover funky storage baskets, on-trend bobble hats, garden lanterns and stylish hand bags!

Right then, let’s get down to business.  My Learn to Crochet sessions are 1-2-1, so it’s just you and me, for roughly ninety minutes. Sometimes it takes a little longer and sometimes a little less time is needed, but that’s absolutely fine by me.  Us teachers know that everyone learns differently and I’ve got plenty of tricks up my crocheted sleeves for anything that you might find tricky.

Coming on your own might fill you with dread but trust me – I’m not scary at all!  You’ll get soooo much more out of the session on your own than by bringing a friend who, let’s be honest, doesn’t really want to be there.

‘In Feb 2020, I had a Learn to Crochet lesson with Nicola. I was quite nervous but she soon made me feel relaxed. The lesson went at my pace; it was great to have the support to be able to master the basic stitches. I would 100% recommend it well worth the money.’ Alison

Crochet is so popular at the moment which is great news!  But it does mean that Im usually booked up at least one month in advance so please hit that button at the bottom of the page sooner rather than later  – lets get this crochet party started!

When you come for your Learn to Crochet session, we’ll start right at the beginning with learning how to hold the hook and yarn, before moving onto learning how to get going (the chain stitch) and then I’ll teach you one basic crochet stitch (the treble crochet stitch), which you’ll use to make your first ever scarf with!  How exciting is that?!  Did you hear me: your first ever crocheted scarf!

Just a little heads up – if you can already crochet (this means you can confidently hold the hook and do the chain stitch) but would like reminding of the basic crochet stitches, please take a look at my Crochet Refresher Workshop, which runs once every 6 weeks. Click HERE to see the date of the next refresher workshop.

Phew! I think that’s it. It’s been really nice to ‘meet’ you and I do hope that you’ll get in touch if you like the sound of what I have to offer. If you’re still wondering if it’s for you, picture yourself tucked up on the sofa with a cup of something warm and delicious, making something you can be proud of. If that makes you smile, I reckon you’ve come to the right place.

P.S. I run adult-only (aged 18 years and over) workshops and lessons that aren’t suitable for children. However, there are lots of appropriate resources out there; you could contact some of the Wiltshire libraries who often host free drop-in sessions for knitting and crochet (take a look on Facebook as a starting point). And of course, YouTube is positively groaning with free video lessons for children just starting out.
