Every November, millions of people wear a poppy to remember those who have served and sacrificed. If you enjoy crochet, why not make your own?

This easy crochet poppy is a lovely little project that’s quick to make and can be worn year after year. It’s perfect for adding to a brooch, sewing onto a bag or hat, decorating a wreath or simply displaying at home during Remembrance.

Once you’ve made your first one, you’ll soon find yourself making more for family and friends too.

What You’ll Need To Crochet Poppies

To crochet your poppy you’ll need:

  • 3.5mm crochet hook
  • Red DK yarn
  • Black DK yarn
  • Darning needle
  • Scissors
  • Brooch back (optional)

If you’d like a larger poppy, simply use chunky yarn with a 5mm crochet hook.

In black, start with a slip knot and ch 5.  Join with a ss into the furthest chain from the hook to make a circle.

Ch 2, pop a stitch marker into the chain just under your hook.  Put 10 tr into the circle.  Join with a ss into the stitch after the stitch marker AND CHANGE COLOUR AT THE SAME TIME (CHANGE TO RED).

Ch 1, pop a stitch marker into the ch 1 and put 1 dc into the same stitch as the ss you’ve just done. Put 2 dc into each stitch all the way around.  Join with a ss into the stitch after the stitch marker.

Ch 2, put 1 tr into the same stitch as the ss you’ve just done.  Put 2 tr in each stitch for the next 8 stitches.

Ss into the next stitch, ss into the next stitch.

Put 2 tr into the remaining stitches until you have 2 stitches left.  Ss into the last 2 stitches.

Cut and fasten off.

Sew a brooch back on the back of the poppy if you’d like to wear it as a brooch.

Once you’ve finished crocheting your poppy, weave in all of the yarn ends neatly using a darning needle.

If you’d like to wear it as a brooch, simply sew or glue a brooch back onto the reverse. Alternatively, stitch your poppy onto a hat, scarf, bag, wreath or cushion to create a beautiful handmade remembrance display.

Because they’re so quick to make, crochet poppies are also ideal for fundraising events, community projects or crafting with friends.
