I’ve got a really sad learn to crochet story to tell you; but it’s got a really happy ending – I promise!

Last year, Sue and her friend came for a Learn to Crochet session with me in The Crochet Cabin. I always start my Learn to Crochet sessions off by asking whether you’ve ever tried crocheting before, and that’s when Sue told me the saddest thing I’ve ever heard. She said she’d booked a Learn to Crochet workshop in her home town (they’d travelled 2 hours to me for their session!) and when she arrived and told the teacher that she was left handed, the teacher had told Sue she wouldn’t be able to crochet and gave her the money back for the workshop and sent Sue home. I told you it was a sad story didn’t I?

Now let me clear this up straight away. If you are left handed, you CAN crochet, and there’s ABSOLUTELY NO REASON why you can’t. You will crochet in exactly the same way as a right handed person, you’ll just use the other hand. And it’s as simple as that.

Let’s get back to Sue, and what happened when her and her friend (also called Sue!) came for a Learn to Crochet session in The Crochet Cabin. First we had a cuppa and a biscuit, and had a chat about their journey down to Melksham, and Sue’s experience with crochet in the past. Then we got our hooks out and I taught Sue how to hold the hook in one hand and the yarn in the other. It turned out that the other Sue could already crochet a little bit so at this point I did some multi tasking and taught the other Sue a few different crochet stitches and set her up making some flowers and hearts.

Sue, who could already crochet, started crocheting flowers and hearts.

Back to the Learn to Crochet. Once Sue was confident holding the hook and yarn, I taught her how to do the chain stitch. Whilst having another cuppa and a biscuit, she had plenty of time to practise the chain stitch. Every time Sue put her crochet down to sip her tea, she had to remember how to hold the hook and yarn again which is a great way to practise. You see, there is method in me making you endless cups of tea while you’re here!

When Sue was ready, I taught her how to crochet one basic crochet stitch and she started making her first, very simple, scarf. I told you it was a happy ending!

Left handed Sue, can crochet!

Learn to Crochet session in The Crochet Cabin are usually taught on a 1-2-1 basis (unless you want to bring a friend along) which means we can go at YOUR pace, without you worrying that you’re holding up the rest of the group or itching to get on if you pick it up really quickly. We can keep practising the same things over and over again, until you feel confident in whatever you’re finding the trickiest.

After the session, when you get home, they’ll be an email waiting for you which will include all the instructions on learning to crochet written down, with videos too, so you can keep watching and keep practising. You’ll also receive an invite to join my private Facebook group where you can ask for help, be inspired and make friends who also love to crochet! And I’m only ever a text or email away if you get really stuck. Just shout and I’ll sort you out!
