This month something very exciting happened… I had one of my patterns published in Crochet Now magazine!
I still can’t quite believe it. I’ve been reading Crochet Now for years (usually with a biscuit or three) and to see my own design in those glossy pages felt completely surreal. I may have squealed in the kitchen when the copy arrived. Mr SC definitely raised an eyebrow.
The pattern they featured was a set of chunky crochet plant hangers…one of those easy, satisfying makes that looks far more complicated than it actually is. They’re bold, textured and super practical, too. I’ve had these hanging up in my crochet cabin for months now and every time someone spots them, they ask, “Did you make those?”
Well yes. Yes I did. And now you can too.
Why this is the perfect beginner crochet pattern
These little hanging planters are ideal for beginners, especially if you’ve only ever made flat projects like washcloths or granny squares. They’re worked in the round, but don’t panic….it’s not fiddly, and there’s no shaping to worry about. Once you get into the rhythm of the stitches, you’ll fly through them. Honestly, they’re the kind of project you can whip up while watching telly (or in my case, listening to birds in the garden).
They use chunky 5mm Bobbiny cord, which I absolutely love…it gives such a satisfying stitch definition and structure. Plus it comes in the most delicious colours. I used mustard, teal and lavender for my samples, but honestly, you could go wild with your stash and make a rainbow of them!
Each hanger uses just 50m of cord, a wooden ring, and a little recycled plastic pot (which I also stock in the shop). You could absolutely use them for real plants, but I’ve got faux greenery in mine to save on watering… and to stop me accidentally knocking them over while I’m digging through yarn!
What you need for this easy crochet project
Here’s what I used for each one:
- Bobbiny 5mm cord (one of my favourites to work with!)
- An 8mm hook
- 1 wooden ring
- 1 recycled pot
The pattern includes full step-by-step instructions and is now available directly from my website, if you missed the mag! It’s part of my growing collection of easy crochet patterns…all designed to build confidence and give that lovely “I actually made this!” feeling.
You’ll also find lots of free patterns too, including my ever-popular Christmas crackers, a notebook cover and a cosy mug hug.
