Learn to Crochet with me!
1-2-1 Learn to Crochet sessions in Melksham, Wiltshire.
Yay – You’ve found me! I’m Nicola…The Secret Crocheter!
I reckon you’re here because you’d like to learn to crochet, and let me tell you, if I’m right, then I’m the woman for you! We’re about to embark on the most exciting journey together and I can’t wait to see you fall in love with crochet, just like I did (many years ago!).
I’ve been a teacher for the past twenty years and for the last eight-ish years, I’ve been teaching people to crochet; I think I’ve taught over 500 people to crochet to date! I hear a lot of the same phrases at the start of the session: ‘I’ve tried to teach myself loads of times before but I just can’t get it,’ or ‘I’m left handed so I can’t crochet,’ or ‘I’m really cack handed!’ Let me tell you now that EVERYONE can crochet; all you need is an awesome teacher (hello!) and plenty of time to practice.
I promise you – you’re only one step away from your first crocheted hat, scarf or blanket.
‘I had my “Learn to Crochet” lesson back in May 2019 and it’s safe to say I was hooked. I have totally enjoyed my crochet journey with The Secret Crocheter, making new things in all of the wonderful workshops…It’s safe to say crochet has changed my life for the better, with new friends I would never have met with The Secret Crocheter.’ Janet.
I live in a tucked away part of Melksham and this is where you’ll find my purpose-built crochet cabin (built by my very clever husband). It’s filled with bright and colourful crochet makes, all designed and made by yours truly, which will show you just how cool it is to crochet! You won’t find a matinee jacket nor a pair of baby booties in here, oh no! Instead, you’ll discover funky storage baskets, on-trend bobble hats, garden lanterns and stylish hand bags!
Right then, let’s get down to business. My Learn to Crochet sessions are 1-2-1, so it’s just you and me, for roughly ninety minutes. Sometimes it takes a little longer and sometimes a little less time is needed, but that’s absolutely fine by me. Us teachers know that everyone learns differently and I’ve got plenty of tricks up my crocheted sleeves for anything that you might find tricky.
Coming on your own might fill you with dread but trust me – I’m not scary at all! You’ll get soooo much more out of the session on your own than by bringing a friend who, let’s be honest, doesn’t really want to be there.
‘In Feb 2020, I had a Learn to Crochet lesson with Nicola. I was quite nervous but she soon made me feel relaxed. The lesson went at my pace; it was great to have the support to be able to master the basic stitches. I would 100% recommend it well worth the money.’ Alison

Crochet is so popular at the moment which is great news! But it does mean that I’m usually booked up at few months in advance so please hit that button at the bottom of the page sooner rather than later.
When you come for your Learn to Crochet session, we’ll start right at the beginning with learning how to hold the hook and yarn, before moving onto learning how to get going (the chain stitch) and then I’ll teach you one basic crochet stitch (the treble crochet stitch), which you’ll use to make your first ever scarf with! How exciting is that?! Did you hear me: your first ever crocheted scarf!
P.S. I run adult-only (aged 18 years and over) workshops and lessons that aren’t suitable for children. However, there are lots of appropriate resources out there; you could contact some of the Wiltshire libraries who often host free drop-in sessions for knitting and crochet (take a look on Facebook as a starting point).
LEARN TO CROCHET KIT
If you’re not local to Melksham, or would like to learn in a group with friends, how about my best selling Learn to Crochet Kit?! Keep reading to find out how you can grab 10% off your kit…
This kit is packed full of all the essentials you’ll need to get your crochet journey off to a flying start. And the best part is that you don’t even need to leave the sofa (unless you need to make a cuppa of course!), as everything you need is included, and it comes with supporting videos too.
Here’s what Liz says about my Learn to Crochet Kit:
“I bought this “Learn to Crochet” after I retired and I’ve never looked back. Nicola’s kits are so easy to follow with explanatory videos. I’d never crocheted before and had no “one to one” instruction as I’m not local to Nichola. I’ve completed many of her kits since both for myself and for gifts. Highly recommended!”
The Learn to Crochet kit includes:
a 5mm soft grip crochet hook,
50g of chunky yarn (100% acrylic) to practise with,
100g of soft and chunky yarn (70% acrylic, 30% wool) to make a snuggly cowl,
a detailed booklet of written instructions in UK terminology including pictures, step by step guidance and videos
a stitch marker and a darning needle
follow up emails and support
Once you feel confident with the basic stitch and have had lots of practise, you’ll be able to crochet a stunning cowl; perfect for yourself or to give as a gift.
Don’t just take my word for it; here’s what Stacie says:
“I’d tried to learn to crochet many times over the years and given up all hope! I saw this kit online and thought one last try…It included everything I needed to get started and clearly written instructions with pictures and some wool to practice before I started the real thing. The thing that helped me the most personally were the videos, Nicola explains what to do as she slowly shows you what she means . I could replay these videos as many times as I needed until something finally clicked and all of a sudden I was the very proud owner of a beautiful scarf that I’d crocheted all by myself. This was the start of my love for crochet…and I’ve been hooked ever since! I sometimes even replay the videos now, years later when I forget what I need to do! I can’t recommend this kit enough.”
This Learn to Crochet kit is suitable for adults. With adult support, this kit will also be suitable for children and is often a better way for them to learn as they can do it in stages.
