Description

Sometimes the smallest crochet projects have the biggest impact.

These simple Crochet Compassion Memory Hearts are made in pairs. One heart stays with a patient receiving end-of-life care, while the matching heart is given to a loved one to keep close. Although they may be apart, the two hearts remain connected, offering comfort during an incredibly difficult time.

It’s such a simple idea, but one that means so much to the families who receive them.

This FREE crochet pattern has been designed to create a small, soft heart that sits comfortably in the palm of your hand. They’re quick to make, use very little yarn and are a lovely way to use up oddments from your stash while creating something truly meaningful.

You Will Need:

The pattern includes step by step instructions with pictures and videos, and is suitable for someone who has crocheted before.

Many hospitals, hospices and palliative care teams welcome donations of compassion memory hearts, although requirements can vary from one organisation to another.

Before making a batch, it’s always worth checking with your chosen charity or healthcare provider to find out:

  • Whether they’re currently accepting donations.
  • Their preferred colours and sizes.
  • Any specific requirements for yarn, stuffing or finishing.

Red and blue hearts are often the most requested, but your local organisation will be able to advise.

Every pair you make has the potential to bring comfort to someone during one of life’s hardest moments. It’s a wonderful reminder that a handmade gift, created with kindness, can say so much when words simply aren’t enough.

Hello there, it’s Nicola here and I’m The Secret Crocheter! I know what you’re thinking already: ‘it’s not much of a secret is it?!’ Well, no – you’re absolutely bang on there.  But I can explain, I promise!

So, the thing is, I used to be a primary school teacher, and to cut a long story short, I fell out of love with teaching children and fell in love with teaching adults how to crochet instead.  Nothing wrong with that, I hear you say…nope, nothing at all, apart from I was doing a bit of both at the same time (and I didn’t want my headteacher to know), so I had to teach crochet in secret…and so The Secret Crocheter was born!

I’ve always been able to crochet, ever since my mum taught me when I was around 8 years old, but I didn’t truly understand its importance in my life until I started to struggle with anxiety in my 30s.  In the midst of panicking and sweating over something quite irrational, I discovered that crochet released a calmness in me that I couldn’t find anywhere else.  I suppose the effects are similar to mindfulness, in that all I was focussing on was the here and now of crocheting.  And of course, this was followed very quickly by a deep joy when I’d created something that I could either wear, use or give as a gift. I don’t think it is an exaggeration to say that crochet sort of healed me, and I soon wanted to share this skill with others.

One thing led to another and before I knew it, Mr SC had built me The Crochet Cabin, which is where I spend my days teaching wannabe crocheters how to crochethosting crochet workshops and designing my own crochet patterns and kits.  If I’m totally honest with you, The Crochet Cabin is my own creative classroom; it’s full of bright and colourful crocheted bunting for all seasons, warm and cosy hats and scarves, and practical baskets and fashionable bags – perfect for storing all that yarn you’ve collected and accompanying your new outfit.  I’m lucky enough to have a lovely teaching space in the cabin that takes the form of a table and seating, which feels like we are all gathering around the kitchen table, communing with our woolly projects, surrounded by the birds and trees in my garden. And it’s all this that I’d love to share with you.

So, here’s a proper secret coming up: since I resigned from my teaching job in 2018, I’ve been trying to shake off the feeling of ‘being a teacher’. But no matter how hard I’ve tried, the love of teaching and learning just won’t budge; I just love teaching – it’s that simple!

And the thing is, I’m not too shabby at it either, which means I can teach you how to crochet a whole host of modern and trendy makes, and instil a confidence in you that you didn’t know existed.  You’ll be the talk of the town once your friends and family start seeing all your handmade creations appearing around your home and garden!

And another little secret – your love of learning something new becomes addictive, and once you start, you can’t stop!
