Who says crackers are just for Christmas?

These crochet Easter crackers are such a fun little make and perfect if you fancy something a bit different for your Easter table. They’ve got all the fun of a proper cracker, but with a handmade twist. They’re made in two halves so they pull apart, and yes…they’ve even got a cracker snap inside so they go bang too.

I mean honestly, what’s not to love?

They’re brilliant for using up yarn from your stash, making something fun out of old toilet roll tubes, and adding a homemade touch to Easter lunch. You could fill them with little chocolate eggs, a joke, a tiny note, or a mini surprise and pop one on each place setting if you’re feeling fancy.

They’re also one of those makes that look really effective without needing loads of yarn or loads of time, which is always a win in my book.

What You’ll Need To Make Easter Crackers

  • 4mm crochet hook
  • 50g Yellow DK yarn
  • Small amount of white DK yarn
  • 2 cracker snaps
  • Jokes
  • White ribbon
  • 2 toilet rolls
  • Treats /egg to go inside the crackers (I haven’t included these either as I’m sure you’ll want to choose your own!)
  • Darning needle, scissors & glue

How to Crochet Easter Crackers

With the yellow, start with a slip knot and ch 28.  Hold your chain from the middle of the toilet roll and stretch it out; it should be longer than the toilet roll.  Mine measured 15cm.

Put 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook and continue with 1 dc in each stitch until the end of the ch.

*Ch 1, turn.  Put 1 dc in each stitch until the end of the row.

Repeat from * to end 28 more times.

Hold your rectangle around the toilet roll to make sure it fits around.  If so, ss the 2 long sides together.

Cut and fasten off.  Sew in your loose ends and turn your yellow tube inside out (so that the slip stitched join is on the inside.

With the white, start with a slip knot and join onto one of the ends of the yellow tube with a dc.  Put 1 dc into each ‘stitch’ around the end of the tube (they’re not proper stitches, just holes really).  When you get back to the start, join with a ss to the first dc that you did.  Cut and fasten off.  Sew in your loose ends.

This is one half of the cracker, now make the other half!

Now for the white ring.

With the white, start with a slip knot and ch 28.  Make sure this ch reaches around the middle of the cracker – it needs to fit over the join between to two yellow parts in the centre of the cracker.  If so, put 1 dc in the 2nd ch from hook and continue with 1 dc in each of the chains until you reach the end.

*Ch 1, turn.  Put 1 dc in each stitch until you reach the end of the row.

Repeat from * to end 4 more times.  Ss the 2 sort ends together.

For the Eggs

In pale blue, start with a slip knot and ch 4.  Put 1 dc into the 2nd ch from hook and continue with 1 dc in each stitch until the end of the row.

*Ch 1, turn, put 2 dc into the first stitch, and 1 dc in each of the other stitches until the end of the row. Repeat from * until end until you have 7 stitches in total.

Ch 1, turn, put 1 dc in each stitch along the row.

*Ch 1, turn, put 1dc2tog in the 1st & 2nd stitch, and 1 dc in the rest of the stitches along the row.

Repeat from * to end until you have 3 stitches left.

Dc all the way around the edge of the egg but do not put 2 dc’s in each corner stitch as we want our egg to have curved edges rather than square corners.

When you get back to the beginning, join with a ss.  With the small bits of other coloured yarn and your darning needle, decorate your egg with some zig zag stitches.

Make another egg.  Sew or glue your eggs to the white rings.

Assembling your cracker

Get one toilet roll and cut it in half.  Glue the cracker snap to the inside of each of the 2 halves, making sure there’s no gap between the two halves.  Put your treat and joke inside the two halves.

Get your two yellow crocheted tubes and put them over the 2 halves of toilet rolls.  I made sure one overlapped the other one, and then put the white ring on top to hide the join.

Get another toilet roll and cut it in half.  Put one half inside one end of the cracker and the other inside the other end of the cracker, making sure there’s about a 2cm gap between these halves and the middle halves of toilet roll (you’re leaving a gap so that you can tie the ribbon).  Glue the cracker snap to the inside of each of these halves of toilet roll.

Tie the two pieces of ribbon into bows in the 2cm gaps – this gives the cracker shape and makes it look pretty too!  Hold the ends firmly, grip the gap where the ribbons are and pull your cracker!  The cracker snap should snap, the cracker will come apart in the middle, and hopefully your treats will fall out!

A few ideas for filling your Easter Crackers

You could pop in mini eggs, little notes, daft jokes, crochet-themed treats, or tiny gifts. They’d be lovely for Easter dinner, spring parties, or just as a fun little make if you fancy trying something a bit different with your yarn scraps.

And if you make a whole set, they look so lovely on the table too. Handmade, cheerful, and guaranteed to get people talking.
