I’ve taught a lot of people to crochet over the years and if there’s one question that I get asked the most, it’s ‘how do I keep my edges straight in crochet?!’

The first thing to say here is that your edges will never be totally straight because you’re crocheting with yarn which often has a mind of it’s own; it will move about and can be stretched in all different directions. I’m not a knitter but I have a feeling that edges look a lot straighter in knitting so perhaps there’s some of you who expect it to look the same. It won’t!

However, there are a few things that you can do to ensure you keep the same number of stitches, which will keep your edges straight in crochet. This is where stitch markers become your best friend. Confession time: I used to think that using stitch markers was a sign of weakness and that a ‘good crocheter’ wouldn’t need them. How wrong I was. These little gems make things so much easier and now I can’t be without them….I love stitch markers so much that I make my own! Check out my handmade stitch markers HERE.

Here’s a short video for you which explains how you can keep your edges straight in crochet with the help of some handy stitch markers.

Keeping your edges in straight in Crochet

The final thing to remember is that there’s other things that will effect keeping your edges straight in crochet like how many chains you make for your turning chain, how tight or loose your tension is and the type of stitch you’re making….but more on this another time!
