Iโ€™m not sure who invented the yarn bomb, but Iโ€™m fairly sure that person was a genius!

Whatโ€™s that?  You donโ€™t know what a yarn bomb isโ€ฆ.ok, let me explain.  Yarn bombing is where you cover an object or structure in a public place with decorative knitted or crocheted material, as a form of street art.  Most of these public places include post boxes, fences, gates and all sorts of bollard type posts. You can find them anywhere in the country, and all over the worldโ€ฆfrom Melksham to Mexico!

Yes, thatโ€™s right, even in Melksham โ€“ thanks to my amazing Crochet Cabin Crew.  Back in February, I suggested that we might like to yarn bomb the top of the post box in the market place in Melksham and the Cabin Crew were quick to agree.  We decided on a Spring theme and got to work crocheting daffodils, sheep, birds and bunnies.

The next job was to attach all the crocheted goodies to the main crocheted topperโ€ฆ.step forward The Secret Crochet Elf who is a whizz with a sewing needle and thread.ย  She carefully sewed all the larger items on before I came along with the glue gun and stuck all the smaller piece in place.

Then the moment of truth โ€“ sneaking out under the cover of darkness and fitting the topper to the post box!  The first time I tried this (after putting a coat over my pjs late one evening), the topper didnโ€™t actually fit so over the next few days I had to crochet a few extra rounds.  Did you know that the diameter of the top of the post box is a whopping 80cm?!

Finally, feeling confident that this time it would fit, I got up at 5am one morning, threw my coat back on over my pjs and wandered down the road to the market place and fitted the topper to the top of the post boxโ€ฆand it fitted like a glove!

Our topper has been in place now for around 3 weeks and itโ€™s surviving the elements well.ย  Itโ€™s had a lot of admirers, and even made it onto Crochet UKโ€™s Facebook page!ย  The plan is that it will stay where it is until the end of May, before being replaced with our next yarn bomb.ย  Any ideas what it might be?!

A huge thank you to the CROCHET CABIN CREW for helping me create our first ever yarn bomb.ย  I canโ€™t wait for the next one! (and the one after that).
